As it’s commonplace for insurance companies to deny coverage to supplements, out-of-pocket supplement expenses are a common frustration among patients. With the introduction of Medical Foods, patients can now obtain reimbursement through insurance when prescribed. Although Medical Foods are different from natural supplements it doesn’t mean they’re better, just an alternative therapy that is covered by insurance.
What Are Medical Foods?
Medical Food is a unique category of FDA regulated products formulated for the dietary management of disease under the supervision of a doctor. Medical Foods supply the body with amino acids (biochemical building blocks) to make certain neurotransmitters (our brain’s biochemical messengers) which target and enter nerve, brain and muscle cells. Once these amino acids enter the cell, the specific neurotransmitter can be made and released.
Neurotransmitters help determine how the body functions and how you feel, think and act. Many diseases and conditions are caused by a depletion of certain neurotransmitters. Depletion can be caused by a number of things such as: poor diet, stress, disease, environment, genetics and prescription drugs. Because Medical Foods work through a different pathway than prescription drugs they don’t interfere with medications.
What Conditions Can Be Managed with Medical Foods?
Some conditions that may be managed by supplying the body with amino acids to help produce proper neurotransmitters and restore healthy cell function include:
- Memory disorders
- Sleep disorders
- High blood pressure
- Lung related disease (COPD, chronic cough, asthma)
Last month, our natural pharmacy began carrying Medical Foods by Physician Therapeutics. Medical Foods are dispensed by Rx-Only. Patients can schedule an appointment to discuss their condition and treatment with Dr. Seligman or Dr. Lecovin. When a Medical Food is prescribed, patients pay their pharmacy copay—the rest is covered by insurance.
Look for our blog post each week about specific Medical Foods and how they work to establish proper balance in the body.
